West African Percussion

West African Percussion is our school-ready mix of bells, shakers and melodic bars, curated for classrooms, and supports Early Years, Primary, Secondary, SEND and Adult. Sizes include Cow Bell 5.5in, Clapsticks (Claves) 23cm, Balafon 8 note and 12 note, plus Percussion Buddies – 5 Set; materials span metal, wood, coconut and goatskin for contrasting timbres.

West African Percussion sets supports instant ensemble work in classrooms. Start with agogos, caxixi and Ankle Shaker – Kenari to build pulse. Bring in Balafon (African Xylophone) for simple melodies on wooden bars with gourd resonators and a rope-lashed frame. Thumb Piano (Mbira) – coconut, painted adds bright tones from metal tines. Clapsticks (Claves) and Cow Bell lock steady rhythms.

Classroom sets keep setup quick and tidy. Use West African Drumming – Percussion Buddies set to add players. Rotate parts by table for Primary and Secondary. Offer choice baskets in Early Years and SEND. Store gourds dry and wipe shells after use. Keep hand percussion in labelled trays for safe transport. Add world-percussion textures during listening tasks.
