Panpipes

Panpipes are end-blown, different-length tubes for Early Years to Adult music-making. Choose 8-note or 13-note bamboo sets with a curved wooden brace; ages 5–18+; clear stepwise pitches and a secure handhold that support breath control, quick ensemble starts and easy assessment across mixed-ability groups; lightweight and compact for class sets; minimal setup for starters and small-group work.

Panpipes give a clear, accessible entry into tuned wind for mixed-age classroom music. Different-length bamboo tubes are arranged from low to high and bound to a curved wooden brace for a steady grip. Two note ranges support progression from first pitches to fuller melodies and simple harmonies. Learners build breath control, clean starts and listening while exploring call-and-response and steady repeating patterns.

Teach posture and angle with the pipes tilted slightly downward to seal the openings. Use paired practice, echo games and small ensembles to encourage pitch matching and confident entries. For care, wipe the bamboo with a dry cloth, then air-dry away from heaters. Store each Panpipe upright or flat in a tray to protect the tubes between lessons.
