Description

The ‘World Music Basket - Small - 15 Instruments’ is a wonderful way in to hands-on music-making for Early Years, Primary, Secondary and community settings. The collection comes in a sturdy bamboo storage basket and contains full teaching support for non-specialists.

There's a wonderfully diverse selection of instruments here, all of them made by hand using natural and recycled materials, and all of the highest musical quality. The instruments are highly tactile and produce a very wide range of different sounds, each characteristic of the particular natural material used.

Making music, whether individually, in pairs or in small groups is one of the best ways for boosting well-being and self-confidence, and these simple hand percussion instruments make it possible for anyone to have a go and reap the benefits. The instruments are literally "pick up and play" - there's no learning curve, and there's no right or wrong way to produce sounds. Music making should include everyone, and these instruments are designed for just that.

The number and variety of the instruments makes all sorts of creative educational adventures possible, from simple counting and sorting, to communication games and ad hoc musical improvisation. You'll find loads of really practical ideas for music sessions in the included Activity Guide - a brilliantly written handbook for the non-specialist teacher (click on the link on the left to see the full content). The Guide not only gives you loads of ideas for developing musical and developmental skills, it also has a section showing how music and rhythm can be used to support the teaching of other subjects, from arithmetic to phonetics. The Guide has been written especially for non-musicians and is in three main sections;

  • Exploring Sounds
  • Making Music
  • Using the Instruments to Improve Learning

It covers, amongst other topics:

  • Creating Sounds
  • Sorting Sounds
  • Talking Sounds
  • Playing Pictures
  • Exploring and Building with Rhythms
  • What Animal is That?
  • Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales
  • Echoes
  • Mixing Rhythms

The final section shows how music and rhythm can transform other fields of learning, from counting to phonetics, making them easy and fun to learn. The Guide Is for everyone and contains special notes relevant to SEN settings.
