The Indonesian Gamelan Standard 20 Player Class Pack Buddies is perfect for whole-class instrumental teaching and learning for pupils from age 6 upwards, as well as for community groups of any age.

This standard pack delivers top-quality sound with elaborate casings, making it a striking visual and musical addition to any setting. It’s ideal if the gamelan will have a permanent home, or if frequent relocation is not necessary. This pack includes everything you need to establish your own gamelan ensemble – playing, performing, and composing.

The pack includes 10 large instruments: 3 Gongs, 1 Balinese drum, 6 metallophones, and 10 pairs of Ceng Ceng (Balinese cymbals), used to keep time and mark accents. The combination offers a broad spectrum of authentic Indonesian gamelan sounds, making it easy to divide the class into pairs, each with a larger and a smaller instrument.

The three sizes of metallophones are beautifully decorated in traditional red, blue, and gold, with metal keys suspended on wire over individual sound chambers, offering a range of 3 octaves. These and all of our gamelan instruments are handcrafted in Bali, Indonesia.

The metallophones use high-quality steel keys and have jackfruit wood casings, delivering great resonance. They are tuned to the same Gamelan Gong Kebyar Pelog Selisir scale as the Budget and Premium models, making them fully compatible across the range. The Balinese drum is constructed from jackfruit wood with two cow-skin heads and tuning knots, and the gong has a bronze center for enhanced resonance.

All instruments in this set have been modified for classroom use. The sturdy metal Gong stands can be disassembled into sections for easy movement and storage, and the metallophone casings have smooth finishes and rubber bases to protect floors.

Special storage/carry bags are available to extend the life of the instruments and to make them easier to transport for outdoor events.

This pack also includes two teaching guides by Andy Gleadhill: the ‘Indonesian Gamelan’ and ‘Percussion Buddies’ books. The Indonesian Gamelan book takes you from basics to your first performance in just 10 lessons, with enough repertoire to cover a year or more of music-making. The Percussion Buddies book helps you develop percussion accompaniments for any ensemble – whether gamelan, drumming, choral, or even ukulele groups.
