Description
This 10 inch Synthetic Pre tuned djembe (“World Slap” pre-tuned djembe) stands 50cm high and is an excellent medium-sized djembe for Primary and Secondary school use.
The pre-tuned design is clean and simple - there are no ropes or tuning adjusters - and the hand prints on the playing head act as useful hand-placement guides to remind players where to strike the drum.
The playing head is made from tough synthetic Mylar drum head (a DuPont Mylar plastic) that produces a really good sound and is quick and easy to wipe-clean. It’s also waterproof so it won’t change in tension if it gets damp (or soaked through!).
The shells are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) shell, the same strong plastic used for water pipes, so they’re very tough, lightweight, and strong. The shells are also very resonant and produce a very full sound. The one-piece shells are covered in a colourfully printed textile “sarong wrap”, featuring flags and maps of the world, and have a rubber base that protects the floor from scratches and the drum from cracks.
The pre-tuned Slap djembe range is a great low-cost starter djembe and makes a very good beginner option, particularly for settings that prefer not to use animal skins (a practical synthetic head alternative). Make sure you choose the right size - download our chart showing hand sizes and recommended djembe diameters for each age group.
Compare this pre-tuned djembe with the same-sized rope-tuned djembe model and with a traditional wooden djembe drum.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best djembe size to start with?
For many school players, a 10 inch djembe is a strong “middle” choice - comfortable for most hands, with a balanced bass and slap. Use a hand-size chart where possible, especially for younger pupils, to keep technique relaxed and sound consistent.
How much does it cost to reskin a djembe?
With a synthetic pre-tuned djembe, you usually don’t “reskin” like a goatskin drum. Instead, you’d replace the head only if it’s damaged. That typically means a parts-and-labour head swap (cost varies by supplier), not full rope re-threading.
What are the main types of djembe for schools?
Common options include pre-tuned synthetic djembes (consistent, low maintenance), rope-tuned djembes (traditional tuning control), and wooden djembes with natural skins (classic tone, more care needed). Your choice depends on upkeep, environment, and teaching setup.
Is a 10 inch djembe a good size for Primary and Secondary?
Yes - 10 inch Synthetic Pre tuned djembe models are often ideal for mixed-age classrooms because they’re manageable to hold, loud enough for ensembles, and predictable in tone. They also avoid weather-related tuning changes that can disrupt lessons.
How do you clean a synthetic pre-tuned djembe?
Use a slightly damp cloth for the Mylar head and a dry cloth for the shell and wrap. Avoid soaking the textile wrap. The big advantage of wipe-clean synthetic heads is quick resets between classes, clubs, and drum circles.
