Frequently Asked Questions
What is a tenor steel pan?
A tenor steel pan (often called the lead steel pan) is the highest-pitched Caribbean steel pan in a band. It’s a single tenor steel pan that carries the main melody while other pans provide chords, harmony and bass lines.
What is the hardest steel pan to play?
Many players find the lead tenor steel pan demanding because it plays most of the tunes and needs accurate, agile sticking. Others say multi-pan instruments such as double seconds steel pan or six-bass pans are harder, as they involve larger movements and more coordination across several drums.
Is the Trinidadian steel pan a membranophone?
No. The Trinidadian steel pan drum (or steel drum) is an idiophone, because the metal pan itself vibrates to make the sound. Membranophones are drums with a stretched skin or membrane, like a snare drum or bass drum.
