Djembe Drum - 11'' diameter, 50cm high, Wide Top, Natural Wood (Product Code: AD-djwt1050)

Description

Please Note: This 11" djembe drum, has a 10" playing head diameter (=/- 0.5"). The overall diameter of the djembe is approx. 11". Most other suppliers only quote the overall diameter, and so what they describe as '10" djembes' have 9" playing heads.

The 11 inch Pro Wide Top wooden djembe is a professional-quality African djembe drum standing 50cm high, built for powerful tone and long-term school use. The wide top design gives a generous strike area for confident technique, while the drum stays compact with a low storage footprint for busy music cupboards.

Although the shell is classed as 11 inch wide-top, the playing head diameter is around 10 inches. This offers more surface area than many standard 50cm djembes, making it ideal for two-handed playing by most teenagers and adults in classroom ensembles, workshops and performance settings.

This 50cm djembe drum produces a bright, cutting slap tone alongside a deep, rounded bass. The projection is balanced, so it carries well in group work without feeling overpowering. Despite its strong voice, it remains relatively lightweight and manageable for day-to-day school use and storage.

Each 11 inch Pro Wide Top wooden djembe drum is hand carved from a single piece of mahogany and finished smooth inside and out, with no splinters or rough edges. The thick natural goatskin head delivers warmth, clarity and durability, while professional pre-stretched rope tuning supports stable tension. Double knotting reinforces the rope system for frequent use in school environments, and a protective rubber base helps safeguard both the drum and the floor.

For peace of mind in schools, materials and workmanship are covered by our African Drumming guarantee: 10 years on djembe shells and 5 years on drum skins, when cared for properly. Keeping the shell dry and stored at a stable temperature and humidity helps prevent cracking. Avoid leaving the drum in direct sunlight or near heat sources, and avoid over-tightening skins.

If you’re storing multiple drums, stackable storage/carry bags (available separately) help keep sets tidy and make moving them safer. Storage/carry bags and accessories are covered for 2 years. For teaching, you can also pair this drum with our free African drumming lesson ideas and classroom resources available on our site.

Eco-note: The wood for the djembe drums is certified plantation-grown mahogany and wood products  like these are a great way to store carbon, providing they’re kept for a long time and not thrown away.

Taking care: The drum is very tough and will last for a very long time if treated with care. When not in use keep it in a dry place away from direct sunlight or other heat sources. If it should get wet, let it dry slowly. Above all keep sharp points away from the drum skin, as this is the most fragile part.

Guarantee: The djembe shell is covered by a 10-year guarantee, and the drum skin is guaranteed for 5 years, provided the care instructions are followed. The storage/carry bags are covered by a 2-year guarantee. Please ensure you follow the "Taking Care" instructions to maintain your guarantees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard size of a djembe drum?
There isn’t one fixed standard, but many “full-size” djembes are larger and taller than classroom models. This 50cm djembe sits in a practical mid-size range, with a wide top and a 10-inch playing head.

What is the best size djembe?
The best size depends on who’s playing and where it’s used. Larger drums can give more bass, while mid-size drums are easier to handle and store. This Pro Wide Top is designed to balance projection with classroom practicality.

What is the best wood for a djembe?
Many hardwoods are used for djembe shells. The key is a solid, well-carved shell with a good finish. This drum is carved from a single piece of mahogany for strength and consistent tone.

Is this djembe covered by a warranty/guarantee?
Yes. Djembe shells are covered for 10 years and drum skins for 5 years, when cared for properly (kept dry, stored away from heat/sun, and not over-tightened).
