Secondary Whole Class Music

Any secondary teacher or non-specialist can lead their class or group from basics to performance level in just a term with Drums for Schools’ award-winning Class Sets.

The Class Sets include everything that’s needed – top quality instruments and comprehensive teaching resources – and the uniquely intuitive and collaborative approach means that no music training is needed – you don’t even need to be able to read music.

Whole class music-making makes a massive impact on pupils’ attitude and behaviour, because it develops their social and emotional skills. Playing regularly in a group fosters listening, empathy and team-working, and boosts mental health and wellbeing.

And it’s not just the pupils who benefit; it’s a tonic and stress reliever for teachers too.

• The styles and instruments are easy to learn, inclusive and fun.

• The teaching support is designed for non-specialists and includes “how to” videos, warm-ups, cultural background and lesson plans.

• The approach has been tried and tested in schools all over the world.

And because the same Class Instrument Set can be used with any number of classes, it means that every child in the school can benefit from weekly ensemble playing – you only need one set of instruments. And you don’t need visiting experts – it really can all be done in house.

All you need is a well ventilated space and room for the players to sit in a circle. If there’s not enough space for distancing, players can mask up as it’s all about “learning by doing” – copying and following the leader – and most of the communication is by hand signals and eye contact. After each session just wipe down the instruments with sanitiser. For more detailed COVID advice click here.
