Drums, Cymbals & Flutes

Drums (kendang), cymbals (cengceng) and flutes (suling)

Drums traditionally lead the gamelan ensemble while cymbals are used as punctuation and flutes embroider the flowing melodies. There are different sizes of each instrument, each with its own tone. A mix of sizes will give you the maximum tonal range.

These Ceng Ceng are Balinese cymbals. Traditionally they are made from expensive bronze, but ours are made from sheet steel which is a lighter, cheaper resource and perfect for children to use to accompany Gamelan. These will make an enticing addition to your instrument collection.
Balinese drums (Kendhang) are traditionally dressed in covers like these during performances. The black and white chequered fabric has religious significance; the colours represent the forces of good and evil, and the chequered design represents the interplay of the two forces.

A fabulous ‘Ceng Ceng Turtle’ just like the Balinese originals but, using steel instead of bronze for the cymbal sections. There are six single Ceng Ceng attached to the turtle's body, and these are played by a single musician using a pair of unattached Ceng Ceng.
